If you enjoyed this picspam/meta thing and you'd like some more, I have a few places I can point you. My ep reviews tend to focus mostly on the characters, because that's who I am as a person and a writer, and I'm okay with that. But there's a lot more to say, a lot more to see.

A few recs:

caffienekitty's 5.10 meta/picspam. She tends to focus more on plot and cinematography, which I find fascinating, and she's a force for squeeful positivity, which can be very refreshing in this fandom.
smilla02's 5.10 meta/picspam focuses more on artistic choices. Her graphics are gorgeous.
animotus's 5.10 picspam and meta is really beautiful, as always.
tracy_loo_who's morning-after picspam is squeeful (and all about the Dean/Cas).

I also love erinrua's reviews and dotfic's commentary. dotfic also had a link round-up that helps put the entire 5.10 experience in perspective.

I'm not really interested in discussing whether or not Supernatural is or is not misogynistic or anti-feminist, not because I don't think that's worth talking about or that fans shouldn't dare to question their shows or because I think Supernatural is perfect and sacrosanct, but just because I don't want to go there at this point in my life and at this point in my fandom experience. I'm clinging to my squee with whitened knuckles, I am. If you're interested, though, musesfool does a lot better job of talking about that stuff than I ever could.

spnroundtable has a workshop on writing like a US citizen as a non-native, and I commented with the raw information in this. benitle asked me if I had these under a tag, because apparently they're kinda useful? So that sounds like a good idea. I was trying to save up enough to have a reasonable-sized blog post instead of just random mutterings, but putting this up now and then posting more under an "americanisms" tag makes sense. I hope this is helpful to someone, somewhere.

This is going to be sooooo picky. OMG, don't read this if you're non-American and sensitive, please. I don't want to step on anyone's toes. (Haha, I typed "toys" at first and then went back and fixed it. Anyway. ::clears throat::) I don't want to harsh anyone's squee or make anyone stop writing or interrupt their creative flow. These are just WEE LITTLE BITTY things that can leap out of a fic and hit me between the eyes with their non-Americanness. But then, I've been a professional editor and proofreader for far too long. IGNORE THIS POST IF IT WILL BOTHER YOU.

But if you're non-American and curious about what WEE TINY ITSY things in your otherwise wonderful fic might jump out as subtle Britishisms, and you wish to improve your Yank-speak, please do read on.

(Keep in mind also that there are lots of regional dialects in America. OUR COUNTRY IS SO HOOOOJJJJ OMG THAT WAS SCARY. I've lived all my life in the Midwest, Indiana to be precise, and it could very well be that some of these things are as American as apple pie down in some weird place like, I dunno, Florida or something.)

Going through old notes is fun. But Oh Em Eff Gee, I do not remember writing this and I have no idea where it came from. It took up exactly one page in my teeny little notebook I used for newspaper meetings in college.

It felt like a very random day. Blake was tired of feeding the cow. He wanted a new pet. So he went to the pet store to look around. "Ah, barracuda!" he thought. "No, too toothy."

"Dove?"

Too holy. Blake could only deal with doves one day a week, and the poor thing would die on a Tuesday.

"Kangaroo rat?"

Too dusty. Same went for chinchillas.

"Whale?"

Too much blubber. And the size of the aquarium would be a bit of a problem in his dinky apartment.

Skunk--the neighbors would complain. Cat--too quiet. Dog--too noisy. Hamster--too small.

Finally admitting defeat, Blake went home and fed his cow.

Urp, my back hurts so bad this morning that it's making me nauseated. Ow, ow, ow. Having flashbacks to when I was having bad back problems when I was thirteen or so. Got so bad I threw up water. Got really dehydrated and when we went in to get blood tests they had to take the blood from my wrist with a butterfly needle because they couldn't get the vein in my arm.

Youch. This back pain has been building for awhile, but I thought I could handle it. I know it's because of the work I do every morning, hauling an elderly gentleman from his bed to his scooter, to the commode, back again... Four pulls like that every morning. I've been feeling the soreness build up in my back for quite a while, but I thought I could manage it until my quitting day, just two weeks off now. But... I guess my back has had enough. It's so bad I almost cried, driving back home, thinking about nothing but getting some ibuprofen in me and taking the pressure off my spine.

Well. I'll just lie here on my bed and write fanfic. Take that, back.
