Valenya Cherbatasky

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 4:18 PM
when did my writing style contract the d
We're starting a new campaign tonight. Here's my new character's (somewhat skeletal) backstory. I dunno why I decided to go crackish this time, but there it is. I'm looking forward to playing a bard again.

--

Valenya Cherbatasky was born in a small village near the border of Novagast and Earnan. Her father was a human, Ivan the woodcutter, and her mother was an elf, Marisuva, who dressed the hair of various important ladies in their village and the surrounding area. On big feast days she also curled the hair of the mayor's prized dogs.

Valenya's father was known for being just a little unbalanced. Because he spent of a lot of time in the forest, he seemed to have accidentally wandered into the Feywild one too many times. He had a strange fondness for the color pink and often declared that someone's face was "sparkly" and they should back off or he would hit them in the forehead with his axe.

Valenya also had three older brothers, Vanya, Vi-Chan, and Chad. When each lad turned twenty-one, they were sent off on a quest to make their way in the world, because Ivan insisted on it. Each one was given only a piece of bread, a hunk of cheese, and a hand-carved comb from their mother. This was meant to be character-building, and it mostly worked. Chad married a princess and Vi-Chan ended up a prosperous merchant in a wealthy city. Vanya, unfortunately, was eaten by a porpoise before he got very far in his journey.

Being always surrounded by such strange folk, and constantly fed fairy-tales and sad stories by her various relations (grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews not-yet-born), Valenya grew up with a great love for the odd, the misfit, the forgotten. Even as a wee tiny girl, she was bold and outgoing, reaching up to tug on the tunic of a passing villager and motioning them to bend down so she could talk to them.

"Come, listen now," she would say. "I tell you a story. It make you sad, but when it finish, you vill be stronger."

Hilariously enough, she was always right. The villager would go on his or her way feeling much better and happier about their life, even though Valenya's tragic tales usually had them breaking down into tears before she was ten minutes in. (And mind you, these tales often lasted an hour or more. They are tales of Novagast, after all, and we all know how that goes.)

By the time Valenya was twenty-one, her parents had recognized that she was destined be a great bard. And so she set out into the world with her piece of bread, hunk of cheese, and hand-carved comb, a sad story on her lips and magic in her heart.

Pretty soon she figured out that she should also get a sword and some armor. I never said Valenya was stupid.

And thus her tale begins.

Random act of kindness?

  • Jul. 10th, 2009 at 11:15 AM
when they are gone
Some random lady in McDonald's this morning bought my breakfast, just out of the blue. I just went up to the counter and said, "Two sausage burritos, please," and she hops over from where she was standing waiting for her order and said, "And I'd like to pay for that, please." I kind of gave a shocked, pleased gasp and smiled at her, and she quickly ran her card through the reader and jumped back over to get her food, and then she hurried out the door. I was so flabbergasted that I didn't even say thank you. I hope she could tell that I was grateful, anyway. It was just so sweet and strange and so very, very unexpected.

A random act of kindness? Do I just look that pathetic and beaten-down in general? Whatever it was, it brightened my day immeasurably. I'm kind of getting a little teary just thinking about it. It was a small act, but it meant so much to me.

Jack's solution
Ooh! My last post was my 500th LJ entry! ::does a dance::

So, I would like to do more stuff, like read and write and rec, but my life has been kind of nuts for the past few days. For one thing, my work schedule is EFFED. Every morning I help a client from 6:30 to 7:30, and it takes fifteen minutes to get there, so you can see when I have to get up. I've managed it by getting up at 6:10, but that's really not a good idea. So there's that, and then now I'm also helping a client every morning from nine to noon, and that's quite a fair drive down to south Fort Wayne. And then also there is another client who doesn't have a schedule but just calls me when I'm needed, sometimes only a few hours ahead of time. For the past two days, that's been from four to nine and five to ten in the evening. (This is the one that sometimes/usually involves hours of walking around pushing a wheelchair.) Plus D&D on Monday and Thursday nights, which is important.

For those of you following along at home, YES, this means that it has been unpossible for me to get a full eight hours of sleep at night. I usually try to nap during the day, especially during my usually free afternoon, but it doesn't always work. This is slowly but surely wearing me down. When I get tired I tend to catch horrible and lingering respiratory infections. DO NOT WANT.

Also I have begun donating plamsa for teh monies, and this is another strain on my body. I think I do okay as long as I drink lots and lots of water and get my protein, though. But that means I have to pee all the time. Suddenly, I like drinking milk, which I never have before, because that's both water AND protein, like some kind of miracle.

Plus trying to exercise and keep up with my flist and spend time with my family and oh, yeah, write those stories I promised to write. I'M GOING TO WRITE SOMETHING THIS AFTERNOON I SWEAR I HAVE TO I MISS IT SO MUCH. Sweet Charity is already late and I really, really, really don't want to renege on summergen. :(

I wish there was some kind of magic button that let you fix your life.

Oh, my pets.

Me: *is holding a bowl with some traces of caramel sauce, Sebastian-rattie sitting on my shoulder*
Sebastian: *stares at interesting wall, turns in nervous circle with claws digging into tender girl skin. Does not sit still*
Me: Would you like some caramel, Sebastian-rattie? *tips bowl toward him*
Sebastian: *descends to lap, waddling like geriatric little fattie he is*
Me: *offers caramel bowl*
Sebastian: *sneezes*
Me: Sebastian! I just offered you a gift of caramel, and you sneezed! That is no way to respond to the gift of caramel! It is nothing to sneeze at!
Sebastian: *stares at interesting wall*
Me: Here, try it. *gets some caramel on finger and holds before pink rattie nose*
Sebastian: *noms*
Me: That's what I thought.
Sebastian: *stares at interesting wall, then lumbers away to harass Taffy-cat*
Taffy: *hisses, goes back to sleep*
Me: I miss my mice. They would just fall asleep on my shoulder and be all sweet and nice and cute. You have sharp claws, my rattie. And Taffy bites me all the frickin' time.
Sebastian: *ignores*
Taffy: *ignores*
Me: *sighs*

Now that Big Bang is finally posted and that load is off my mind and I have a few hours free from my work, I'm, like, bouncing off the metaphorical walls. WHAT TO DOOO??? There are a bunch of Big Bangs I want to read, but which do I start with? [info]bellatemple's cracky masterpiece? [info]tahirire's SRSLY COOL one? [info]july_july_july's amazing-looking mythological one? Oh dear. And there are a bunch of things I need to write, but should I flip out on crack and fluff for a little as an antidote from the angsty, angsty Big Bang, or work on Sweet Charity or spn_summergen? WHAT WHAT WHAT.

I am slightly tempted to post a poll. But you know, it's kinda nice having options and no stress. For the moment.

I suppose I could always answer comments.

Another Year

Thanks to everyone who gave me wishes and sent me encouraging messages and bought me virtual gifts! You made turning twenty-six a delightful experience and I can't thank you enough. ♥ I don't even know if I could list them all, I got so many.

I'm not quite where I thought I would be at this point in my life. I didn't think I'd (still, again) be living in my parents' basement, struggling to pay my bills. I always hoped I would be a published novelist by now. At times I even flirted with the idea of possibly being married by now, but that obviously hasn't happened. Still, all around I have a lot of good things in my life, supportive family and wonderful friends, a hobby that brings me endless joy, plenty of talent if only I knew what to do with it. I've got rhythm, I've got music, I've got my SamnDeannImpalanCastiel, who could ask for anything more, right?

Good day with family. Went and saw Up, which is a beautiful movie in every way. It made me cry. Twice. That just doesn't happen. It made me a laugh a lot, too, which is always good. Then we had a great birthday supper with bratwurst (my favorite summer food) and jello cake and frozen custard for dessert, and my family had gotten me a Wii Fit. It's pretty fun so far, though I'm doing my best to ignore the outdated science and the obnoxious comments the game makes. I don't really care if I lose weight, but I DO want to be more fit, so I'm focusing on that. DDR makes me sweat more, though. I'm just sayin'. And it's less frustrating, though maybe I'll get better at the WF with practice.

And I got this awesome, awesome autographed picture of Meeeesha from [info]mymuseandi, which makes me very, very happy. (Okay, she sent it to me like weeks ago, but I only went and picked it up at the post office this week, so I'm totally counting it as a birthday present.)

Last night I dreamed that I was going to an appointment (to practice CPR, no less), and the person I was meeting with was dead. Just a dead body lying on the floor.

Does this have some kind of meaning I don't want to know about?

boring life stuff )

Oh and also, I haven't been reading as much lately as I would like to. My flist has been posting all kinds of goodies that I really, really want to read, and I will get to them, I will, I really want to. But in the meantime, there is one WIP that I am following with great eagerness, always delighted at every. single. update. I know I've gotten kind of a reputation in the SPN fandom for being a purveyor of all things cute and fluffy (which I don't mind, really, even though I tend to write all kinds of darkfic in my head), but srsly, you guys, this is better.

It's The Wellspring by [info]scourgeofeurope, a Dark Angel/Supernatural crossover in which Dean and Sam come across a tiny smartass in a barn and...well...family happens, is the best explanation. I adore this fic with every bone in my body, including the tiny ones in my ears that have nothing to do with reading fanfiction.

So yeah, if you get sick of waiting for an update on Mouths? Go read that. It's worth it. And the fact of its WIPness is actually sort of a delight, because you know you have something awesome to look forward to, and she also updates pretty regularly, so you know, that's good.

BEBE RACCOON

  • Jun. 19th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
sleepy mice
My family is taking care of a baby raccoon for some friends who are out of town. His name is Rascal and HE IS MADE OF CUTENESS AND FLUFF AND LITTLE GROWLY PURRS OMG. Seriously, I told one of my sisters that he sounds like a digeridoo.

The vid is crap--it's my webcam and I didn't realize it was on for twelve seconds. AND MY HAIR IS SOME KIND OF CRAZY STRESSED-LOOKING FRIZZ HALO I DON'T KNOW. Whatever. It was a long day and I'm tired and I'm not shooting another one. Concentrate on the adorable little masked bandit and ignore the ridiculous human.

And of course, because everything comes back to SamnDean for me, I now want to write a one-shot with the boys finding an abandoned bebe coon in the woods and one being all, "Awww, can we keep it?" and the other being all gruff and "NO WAY" but then softening and sneaking it grapes and stuff. The problem is that in early seasons the softy would definitely be Sam and the gruff one Dean, but now I think the positions would be reversed and it kind of weirds me out a little.

Working on polishing my Big Bang. Going slower than I want it to. I've been having kind of a bad week. Well, weeks. Months, really. Argh. But it has divisions now, and I've started getting rid of all my habitual unnecessary words like "though" and "then" and "little." Listening to my soundtrack, too, enjoying it. Still one more scene I need to write.

Anyway. Not many things feel better than beating Knights of Cydonia on Hard in Guitar Hero. Though I didn't do my tendinitis any favors with that little stunt. I've been playing DDR again, too. Sweated a lot.

And say, I haven't shared the video in a while. It's still just as awesome as last time.

My Evening in Twitters

  • Jun. 16th, 2009 at 12:02 AM
seasonally appropriate!
This afternoon I got the sad, sad call that Josh and Gabe were not going to be at D&D tonight. Obviously, this ruined everything. Okay not really. I still went down to Huntington, with the plan to play geeky games or possibly watch movies. Thus follows some tweets:

Am at Jill & Aaron's. Unfortunately, w/o Josh & Gabe, it's devolved into "What do YOU want to do?" "We could..." "I don't wanna do that..." about 5 hours ago from web

As usual when it's just me and Jill, we start talking about fanfic and rule 34. Transformers fandom WEIRDS US OUT. about 5 hours ago from web

Also, pictures of DRAGONS HAVING SEX WITH CARS. They exist. Aaron is helpless to make us shut up. about 5 hours ago from web

Then Jill and I made a run to Walmart for ice cream and chocolate syrup, and then Chuckles finally showed up and we played an awesome game of Munchkin Cthulhu mixed with Star Munchkin, and it was awesome and I won. Then this:

Also talking about fanmixes while eating choco chip ice cream. Jill is into badnom, which i don't really get, but she says the mixes're good about 2 hours ago from web

AHHH LOL I MEANT BANDOM NOT BADNOM. I think that might be my favorite typo ever. about 2 hours ago from web

And then we watched an episode of Firefly (Our Mrs. Reynolds) and it was awesome and I had the geekiest most awesome night ever.

The End

(Did I also mention that I listened to SPN podfics on the way to and from Huntington? Yes, I am amazing in my geekery. ::preens::)
